Women Celebrating Women
Summer 2022
First things first: Hello and welcome to the 1,300 new hires and interns who have joined us since our last newsletter! We are so excited you’re here.
If spring is the season for rejuvenation, then summer is the season for this new life to flourish. During this transition, let’s remember the value of connection as we welcome “new life” to Kimley-Horn. Is there a new hire joining your team? Invite them out for coffee or lunch. Do you have an intern in your group this summer? Celebrate them on National Intern Day on July 28. A new hire yourself? Use your lunch coupons to learn more about your Kimley-Horn teammates! Relationship building is vital for a successful integration and is a true win-win for all.
In addition, our new hires and interns bring lots of fresh ideas and perspectives. Help them hit the ground running by involving them in meaningful projects, connecting them to others in the firm, and serving as a resource as they dive in and learn what makes Kimley-Horn so special.
We look forward to a successful summer ahead filled with connection as we flourish new hires and integrate them into Kimley-Horn culture! Let’s use the next few months to prepare for the future. I can’t wait to reflect on a successful summer in our next edition of our Women Celebrating Women newsletter.

Development Services | Northern Virginia
What drew you to/how did you get involved in the practice you’re in?
I was lucky enough to be introduced to development services at Virginia Tech (GO HOKIES!) early on in my college experience. Tech has an incredible program that exposes students to professionals from several land development firms throughout the country. I met Kimley-Horn at a career fair and had the opportunity to intern in the Raleigh office before my senior year of college. I started full-time with the Northern Virginia office upon graduation. I have been able to work on a variety of different projects so far at Kimley-Horn—everything from solar, grocery stores, gas stations, data centers, and mixed-use developments. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to be exposed to various projects but have recently been focused on high density redevelopment projects. I love how large transit-oriented development projects focus on the pedestrian and bicycle experiences as well as connectivity to the surrounding communities.
What are some projects you’ve worked on?
I have been able to work on a variety of projects during my time at Kimley-Horn, but the one I have enjoyed the most is the Commerce Metro Center redevelopment project in Reston, Virginia. This project is extra special to me because the Northern Virginia office actually sits in this office park. Right now, the environment is a 1990’s suburban office park with a sea of pavement; however, we are helping the client redevelop it into residential, office, hospitality, and retail space. We work with an incredible design team that has done a tremendous job of integrating the existing buildings with the proposed development. I am so excited to watch the plans come to life… literally in our backyard!
What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have any fun facts?
Outside of work, I love to workout, try new restaurants, and enjoy the DC area with friends! I played soccer at Virginia Tech, so exercise has always been a huge priority for me. After college soccer ended, I found my endorphins through CorePower Yoga and running! I ran the Boston Marathon this past April and was able to raise money for the American Red Cross as a part of my marathon journey. My long–term goal is to complete the “six stars” marathons—Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin, and Tokyo. I have found that having a goal to work towards outside of work helps keep me more motivated in the office as well.
What advice do you have for other women in the firm?
The advice I have for other women in the firm is to always ask questions. My team and I joke around that I ask a lot of “curious cat questions,” but I believe this natural curiosity and confidence to dig deeper to the “why” behind certain tasks have really benefited me early on in my career. I would also encourage everyone to have fun at work—I always look forward to coming into the office. Iron sharpens iron, and I am motivated daily by those who surround me. This statement may sound cheesy, but I feel like I could be digging holes with the people I work with for 10 hours a day, and we would still have fun! I love my job not only because of what I do, but most importantly because of who I do it with. No company is perfect, but I believe we work for the best firm in the industry, comprised of the best people in the industry.
Do you have a motto, phrase, or activity that keeps you motivated?
One of my favorite quotes is: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well–preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a ride.” I am a big believer of seeking out life’s opportunities because of a genuine joy to be alive. We only get one life, so we might as well make the most out of it!

Water/Wastewater | St. Petersburg
What drew you to/how did you get involved in the practice that you’re in?
While I was in college, I gave up bartending to take an internship at Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) on a whim. I was always partial to hydraulics and anything relating to water, and I knew I needed to get serious about my career, so GRU was the perfect opportunity. I fell in love with water and wastewater engineering—it gives me a way to integrate in the community by designing sustainable infrastructure and implementing change that better protects the environment and those who live in it. I interviewed with Wayne White and Lewis Bryant almost 10 years ago, and I chose to come to Kimley-Horn to have an opportunity to work with them. Over the years, we’ve become like family, and I know without a doubt I made the right decision.
What are some projects you’ve worked on?
I’ve worked on everything from a Walmart to a Wastewater Treatment Plant Retrofit with Membrane Bioreactors. My primary practice is water and wastewater, and most of my clients are public municipalities and private utilities. I keep my practice really diverse and it’s helped grow my sphere of influence within Kimley-Horn and throughout the industry. I’m currently working on multiple “outside the fence” projects (pipelines and pump stations), wastewater treatment plant projects (a few in Florida, South/North Carolina, and Arizona), chlorine dioxide pilots, a comprehensive plan and LDC update, and a facilities design for a coastal community (the City of Treasure Island) including the fire station, police station, public works center, marina, and park.
What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have any fun facts?
Like most, I love spending time with friends, family, and my dogs. Gardening and paddle boarding are two of my favorite things to do on the weekend. My favorite hobby is traveling! I’m trying to see all 63 National Parks in the United States by the age of 36—so far I’ve been to 21! The National Parks help me reset by connecting to nature and going off the grid for a bit. Hiking, camping, and backpacking are three of my favorite ways to see the parks. They’re stunning and remind me how vast the world is.
What advice do you have for other women in the firm?
- Always be beyond reproach.
- Cultivate leadership by allowing others to follow their own path—not the one you’ve envisioned for them.
- Take all the feedback and criticism you can get, even when it’s unsolicited. Consider the source and only apply the changes that make you the best version of yourself. Let the rest roll off and be kind to yourself. When something directly conflicts with your personal core values, stand up for what you believe in. If I listened to every person who told me my opinion doesn’t matter or wasn’t valid, I wouldn’t be where I am today. That being said, learning how to communicate your opinion in a way people can understand and rally around is key—and is something I’m always working to improve.
- Be self-aware; know when you’re projecting, when you’re reactive or defensive because of an insecurity, and when to ask for help.
- Build a bench of mentors, coaches, and advocates, including people who challenge you. You need a sounding board and people in your corner. Also remember that at the end of the day, you’re responsible for your career and the decisions you choose to make. Take accountability.
Do you have a motto, phrase, or activity that keeps you motivated?
Live passionately for a life that leaves no regrets. – My grandfather
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. – Henry David Thoreau
I work to make a difference, but also to be able to live the life I’ve imagined for myself. Traveling, exploring the world, and meeting new people help me recharge when I’m starting to burn out. Sometimes I need to be reinspired, and I’m always surprised where that inspiration is hiding.

Lori davidson
Project Manager Stats
DISCIPLINE: Roadway
REGION/OFFICE: Texas/Lubbock
After working for TxDOT for 10 years, Lori Davidson entered the consulting industry at a small firm in Childress, Texas. Three years later, a friend encouraged her to begin her career at Kimley-Horn.
Lori joined Kimley-Horn as a typical Roadway Practice Builder, but over the last five years, her role has transitioned from leading team development and design projects to being on the forefront of innovative contracts with long-standing clients. This non-traditional role has shown Lori a new side of the industry—a side that has energized, motivated, and inspired her. “I really had a passion to pursue different types of contracts that we typically don’t do,” she said.
With constant support from across the firm, Lori has been able to grow her connections, create lasting relationships, and pursue new ideas. In 2016, when TxDOT advertised a contract to develop and teach a project management training program, Lori saw it as a great opportunity for Kimley-Horn. She believed the firm could utilize internal training programs for external clients…but she couldn’t do it alone.
Pulling in the head of the firmwide training team, Catherine Provost as well as other partners across the firm, Lori’s passion project was underway. This year, when regional practice reps reached out in search of ideas for 2022 Shareholder presentations, Lori knew it was the perfect opportunity to highlight the TxDOT training program. With Catherine on board, they began recruiting partners across the firm to help develop a presentation that would effectively share their story.
Do something good every day for you AND those around you. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself―life is short, so enjoy it!
For Lori, this unique project involved stepping out of her comfort zone to pursue work that she was not trained to do, but it also allowed her to work with partners across the firm, leveraging different talents and abilities. “I needed to partner with someone who really knew the training development lingo,” she notes. “It’s not something that we can’t figure out with the right people on our team, so we combined the best of both worlds.”
The success of the TxDOT project challenged Lori in a way that energized and motivated her, and she is grateful to be able to share that success with others across the firm. She hopes that her story will inspire others to fearlessly step out of their comfort zones to pursue their passions―even if they’re new and different. Lori encourages everyone to find partners who share similar passions and will support smart endeavors. “Be smart and be passionate. You will have support from the firm and from partners,” Lori says. “Take advantage of your skills, gifts, and talents. This will make you happy!”
Lori strives to enjoy every aspect of her life, personally and professionally, and knows many times this can be overwhelming, especially for women. She encourages her Kimley-Horn colleagues to make the most of every day and enjoy life. “Do what you can and try not to be too hard on yourself,” Lori says. “Do something good every day for you AND those around you. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself―life is short, so enjoy it!”
